St Brendan's Foodbank

We are now taking donations for the St Brendan's Foodbank. Many of you will remember that the foodbank was in operation before Covid and many families benefited from that extra bit of help when it was needed.
Unfortunately, we currently have members of our community who are doing it a bit tough due to illness and, as is the nature of the St Brendan's community, we have had a lot of other families approaching us wanting to help. We see that the best way to help would be to get the foodbank up and running again. This will mean that these families don't have to worry about putting food on the table each night and can focus on what is most important.
We are looking for donations of home cooked meals that can be frozen and distributed as needed, basic grocery items and also hot meals that can be delivered to families on the same night they are donated. Any and all help is greatly appreciated, we all know how fabulous this community is at supporting each other when times are tough.
Donations can be dropped at the school office and we will coordinate delivery. If you have any questions about the program please phone (03) 5233 1464.
2/3/4 Classroom News

Hi everybody!
It was fabulous to see our school represented at Kana. We were so colourful and looked amazing. So amazing that we won ‘Best School Entry’! Congratulations and thank you to all the students, parents and staff who contributed in any way. It was a wonderful opportunity to showcase our incredible school.
It was lovely to have the Year 4 girls back with us whilst the 5/6’s were on camp. We enjoyed having them in our class. The seniors looked happy but tired on their return!
Religious Education: This week we watched a clip and discussed what ‘Fratelli Tutti’ is. It is a letter written by Pope Frances explaining that fraternity and social friendship are the ways to build a better, more just and peaceful world, with the commitment of all: people and institutions. Fratelli Tutti is a profound message that calls each of us to a deeper understanding of social friendship, community, and our shared responsibility to promote the common good.
Literacy: This week we have been investigating different ways the long vowel /ee/ sound can be represented. We have also been working on narratives for our Portfolios. Tuesday was Harmony Day and we discussed its meaning and origins.
Numeracy: This week we have completed our Subtraction pre-test and are revising addition facts including doubles, near doubles, and adding 2 and 3 digit numbers.
Integrated Curriculum: In I.C. the children have been investigating Aboriginal Creation stories about the Rainbow Serpent and Tiddalik.
The Resilience Project: This week we reflected on moments of gratitude in our lives, identifying the events and how they made us feel.
Homework has been sent home with a range of basic maths activities and is due back by Monday.
The Star of the Week award goes to Sofia Gray. Congratulations on your excellent effort!
If you have any questions or queries please contact me via email.

Prep/1 Classroom News

We’ve had another very productive week in Prep/1 this week!
Literacy: In writing this week, we’ve been innovating on our model story, “The Three Wishes” and developing new stories by changing the characters. Students appeared to really enjoy coming up with their own characters and adding some creative flair to their stories.
Maths: We are currently working on addition and subtraction. Our game of the week is “5 in a row.” This game requires players to either add up or take-away two numbers. They then decide where they would like to place their counter with the aim to get 5 counters in a row.

To check out how this game is played, scan the QR code. It might be fun to try at home!
Religion: This week, the Prep/1’s are running a liturgy for the whole school. The theme is “relationships.’ All parents are welcome to attend - Thursday, 2.30pm in the hall.
Integrated Curriculum: We have had some wonderful ‘family project’ presentations so far. It has been exciting to learn about Emily’s lawn bowls, Ivy’s Dad (the footy umpire) and Ruby’s pets. When your child is ready to present, email me and we can organise a time.
Keep up the home reading!

Acknowledgement of Country

At St. Brendan’s Primary School we pay our respects to the traditional owners of the land, the Gulidjan people and pay our respect to their Elders past, present and emerging.
We will respect the land, animals and waterways, from the roots of the earth to the tops of the trees. Through the example of our first Australians, we understand that if we look after the country, then the country will look after us.
Principal's Message

Dear Families and Friends,
This week, Tahlia, Deb and I have had the pleasure of taking our Year 5/6 students to a school camp at Sovereign Hill. It is not lost on us how lucky we are to work where we do. Not only are our students a pleasure to take away, the small numbers allow us to spend quality time with them and get to know them well. It is truly a pleasurable experience.
I know from past experience with camps that it is not always this case. We have come across many schools over the last few days, much bigger schools, where students are continually being lined up and counted, broken into small groups, and then watching the clock to meet up with the big group again. We look at these schools and feel very grateful for what we have, and we know that our students feel the same way. We were able to explore Sovereign Hill at a leisurely pace and with a level of flexibility, allowing students to have a say in what they would like to do.
We all came away feeling pretty glad that we didn’t live in the goldfields. It was tough work in a dirty, dusty environment and the tents would have done little to shield the gold diggers from the cold of Ballarat! We also discovered that going to the dentist would have been an excruciating experience in those days!
Did you know?
People used to also go to the barbers for dentistry and medical care. The red and white poles outside a barber shop represent blood and bandages, letting you know that medical care was also available.
I would like to extend a thank you to Tahlia and Deb for taking time away from their families so that our students could have this experience. Thank you also to the staff back at school for ensuring that everything ran smoothly. When three staff members in a small school are away, it means extra yard duties and responsibilities for those left behind. We appreciate all that you do.
Warm Regards,
Leanne Eastman

HARMONY DAY
On Tuesday it was Harmony Day. Harmony Day celebrates and recognises our diversity and brings together Australians from all different backgrounds. It’s about inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone.

The Year Prep to Four students were fortunate to have Isis (Sofia’s Mum) in as a guest speaker. Isis is from Colombia and I have been told that she did a wonderful job of talking to the students about her country. Thank you for taking the time to tell us about Colombia Isis. It was a wonderful experience for our students, opening their eyes to the wider world.
Isis came to school on Tuesday to give us a talk about Colombia. She said it was made a country in 1810. She also told us about the different cities in Columbia. They have a lot of dresses and clothes for celebrating with parades and festivals. The native flower is an orchid and the population is 52 million people. Sofia came dressed in a costume that they wear. We liked listening to Isis and learning about Colombia.
By Grace and Kaitlyn.
Isis came to school and told us lots of things about Colombia. The buildings are really colourful. Most schools start at 6.00am and go to 1.00pm. Some schools start at 6.00am and go to 3.00pm! They have a city with giant walls to protect them and you could see your enemies coming. They celebrate a lot and have food, ice-creams, fireworks and lights. The clothes are beautiful and unique. They have jaguars and anacondas. They have monkeys and they steal food from people.
By Harriet, Nellie and Brianna.

On Thursday, many of us wore a touch of orange to celebrate the cultural diversity of our country. Mandy was in her element as orange is her favourite colour. It wasn’t hard to spot her!

KANA
What a fun time we had at KANA! We were excited to top it off with winning Best School Entry. Thank you to Isis, Kara, Lauren and Nenje who answered the call to help out with the planning. A special thanks to Isis for making the ‘Big Top’ and to Lauren for making the drums. It was a great idea to opt for a ‘walking’ Big Top rather than going with the truck. It really looked fantastic. The dahlia’s also added a special touch, the people in the crowd were clearly delighted to receive them.
Finally, a big thank you to all families who joined in the fun by dressing up and coming out to walk with us on the day. It was an amazing turnout!

MOTHERS DAY CLASSIC EVENT
This year we are taking part in the Mother's Day Classic to help those affected by women's cancers. Unfortunately this hits close to home for our school community and we are committed to making a difference. Donations and registration money from the event will support the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) and other women's cancer charities in funding life saving research to improve cancer detection and support those living with cancer.
The Colac event is taking place on Sunday 14th May at the Botanic Gardens with two categories on offer; the 3.3km run which begins at 9am or the 3.3km walk which kicks off at 9.05am.
We have created our own fundraising team called 'St Brendan's Coragulac' and we would love it if you could register to join us in walking or running on the day. If you can't make it on Mother's Day please feel free to leave a donation in lieu of participation. THE RESILIENCE PROJECT
GRATITUDE
Working on gratitude helps us to be thankful and appreciate what we have in our lives, rather than focusing on what we don’t have or what we want. When we practise being grateful, we start to scan the world to look for positives–this only takes 21 days! Practising gratitude every day increases our levels of energy, helps us to feel happier and more focused, determined and optimistic. It even helps us have a better sleep, lowers levels of anxiety and depression and we are less likely to get sick. So many benefits–let’s all try to be grateful for the things and people in our lives every day!
Whole Family Activity - Gratitude Scavenger Hunt: As a family create a scavenger hunt list of things that make happy that you are grateful for, you can make your own list or use the examples below:
- Something that makes you happy
- Something you love to smell
- Something you enjoy looking at
- Something that is your favourite colour
- Something you like in nature
- Something that is useful for you
Each member of the family uses the list, and has to find as many things as they can. You can hunt for things inside or outside, or both. You can hunt for real things, or you can also do this using magazines or pictures from the internet.
After a set amount of time hunting, come back together, have a look at what each person collected and let them explain why they are grateful for each item.
Family Habit Builder: Every night at dinner, have each person talk about their favourite thing about that day.
2/3/4 Classroom News

Hi everybody!
I would like to mention as a late response to the Information Night, that we had a fantastic night! Thank you to everyone who was able to come along and listen, participate and support our school.
Thank you to Alice and Mick who looked after my class last week. I am pleased you got to see first-hand how fantastic they are!
Yesterday we celebrated another successful Sports Day. The children were so supportive of each other and it was lovely to watch. All the teams tried their hardest, and congratulations to McCarthy who were the winners on the day. GO McCARTHY!!!!
I look forward to seeing you on Saturday for the Kana Parade!
Religious Education: This week we had a small experience of what it is like for children in other countries who have a limited water supply. The children were placed in pairs and were asked to carry a bucket full of water around the yard and up the fort and down the slide.
The teams had to work out the best way to achieve this without spilling the water. It was wonderful to see the children working things out together and we had hardly any spillage!
A big thank you to Liz who co-ordinated the activity. It really did give a new perspective to how lucky we are to have easy access to clean water.
Literacy: This week we have new spelling words to learn. The Year 3’s and 4’s are still working on homophones and the Year 2’s are investigating common spellings for ‘a’ including (train), (day), (bake) and break. The children completed a persuasive text last week with Alice when I was away. They worked hard and produced great texts.
Numeracy: In Maths we are investigating Addition and Subtraction. We have had our Addition pre-test and are revising addition facts including doubles, near doubles, and adding 2 and 3 digit numbers.
Integrated Curriculum: In I.C. the children have been learning about the tools Aboriginal people made and used before the First Fleet arrived.
Homework has been sent home with a range of basic maths activities and new spelling words to learn. Homework is due back by Monday.
The Star of the Week award goes to Isabella Coates. Congratulations on your excellent effort!

Community Book Club

Three weeks until our first Book Club Night! I hope that everyone has been able to get their hands on a copy of the book. I am happy to loan my copy out if you are keen to get on board, just let me know if you would like to borrow it.
We have had great feedback on 'I'll Leave You With This' and can't wait to discuss it with you all.
If you don't think that you will be able to finish the book before the 3rd, please still come along on the night, we will have some drinks and nibbles and it should be a lovely social night regardless of the book chat.
Please have a think about what other books you might like to read with Book Club and email me any suggestions that you have. I am researching our next book at the moment and plan to have 3 options to present to you on Book Club night, and everyone can vote to decide what our next read will be. Our second Book Club night will be held on Monday 15th May, allowing the school holidays and first few weeks of next term to read the book. Looking forward to seeing you all there!

Prep/1 Classroom News

Congratulations to everyone on a very successful Sports Day! It was exciting to see everyone getting involved and giving it their best shot. I was extremely proud of the determination and sportsmanship shown by all students. Thanks to all families who supported the day!
Literacy: This week for writing, students were exploring ways to begin stories. They investigated traditional story openings like, “Once upon a time..,” or “Long, long ago..” as well as some more interesting story starters from books chosen off the library shelves. Students then had the opportunity to write their own story starter. Here are some examples:
Lewie
Chosen from a story: Have you ever felt as if you don’t quite fit in?
Written by Lewie: Lewie sailed over the water to the enemy's castle.
Charli
Chosen from a story: Florence was no ordinary seal.
Written by Charli: On an island lived a little bug named Sparkle.
Lexi
Chosen from a story: My Dad is the coolest because he tickles me.
Written by Lexi: Deep, deep in the ocean there was an axolotl.
Maths: For Maths we have been tackling lots of problem solving this week. It has been great to see the multitude of different ways that students attempt the same problem. Our latest problem was as follows:
- On a farm, there were some chickens and some sheep.
- Altogether, there were 8 heads and 22 feet.
- How many chickens were there?
Ask your child to show you how they went about answering this question!
Religion: The 40 days of lent challenge continues. On Tuesday Mrs McGuane discussed the importance of water and how precious this resource can be. Students then completed a water-carrying challenge. Thanks to Mrs McGuane for the hands-on, experiential learning!
Keep up the home reading everyone!

Principal's Message

Dear families and friends,
What a fabulous day it was yesterday! Not only was it our annual School Sports Day, it was also the arrival of our new school bus. It doesn’t get much better than that!
As I drove the bus up to school and saw all the cars in the car park, I thought that Mass must have been on, as well as the Sports. But I was wrong. The cars all belonged to parents, carers, grandparents, cousins and ex-students who had come to support their children at the School Sports. What a fabulous turnout! Thank you to everyone who was able to make it. You helped to make the day so special for the children and our whole school community.
I would like to thank our Sports teacher, Kate Parker, for all of the work she put into planning the day. It ran like clockwork! Thanks also to our Advisory Chair, Mark Robb, for marking the lines on Monday and for also cooking the barbeque with his father. You went above and beyond and we really appreciate it.
The children threw themselves wholeheartedly into giving every event their best shot. They pushed themselves to the limit, were gracious in victory, and defeat, and cheered and encouraged one another all the way. It was a joy to watch!
The results were very close, with the final tally as follows:
McCarthy: 129
Turner: 120
Spokes: 119
Congratulations to the McCarthy House who were the victors on the day.
I look forward to seeing many of you on Saturday at the KANA parade. The good times continue!
Warm Regards,

SCHOOL BUS
The arrival of the new bus is exciting for the whole school community. It will be used to bring students in from Colac, take students on small camps and excursions, and also take children on field trips around Colac and surrounding areas. Providing more opportunities for children to explore the world outside the school environment will enhance learning opportunities and experiences for our students.
The bus was purchased from a Christian church in Pt Cook. It was used to transport elderly people in the Parish and was also driven to Melbourne each Sunday in order to feed and care for the homeless. Daniel, the Church pastor, was sad to see the bus go as it held many memories for him. He was really happy that it was going to a school community and he hopes to head down the road in the future to visit us at St. Brendan’s. We hope to follow Daniel’s lead and find some ways that we can use the bus to do good for others. It feels quite special to have purchased a bus which helped to provide service and care for those in need.

KANA
We are all getting very excited for the Kana parade this Saturday! Below are some details about how the day will run:
Start & Finish Times: The parade begins moving at 1pm, however everyone needs to be in the marshalling area and ready to go at 12.30pm at the latest. To ensure we are ready in time we ask people to aim to meet at 12pm.
The marshalling area will be clearly marked by Kana volunteers on the day and is located near McDonalds in Colac. The parade will end on Dennis Street in Colac near the police station. If parents are not walking with their children in the parade then this will be the pick up point.
Costumes: The theme for this year is 'Circus' and we hope that everyone will come dressed in their best circus costume for the parade... we have heard a whisper that we might even have some circus animals joining us in our group!
Transport: We had planned on decorating a truck to travel on for the parade but have decided not to go ahead with this, instead we will be walking together in a group. Don't worry there will still be plenty of decorations for us to carry along! Families, friends, parents and younger siblings are all welcome to walk along in the parade with us, the more the merrier!
The parade is expected to travel at a speed of 4-5km per hour with no stopping. Nothing is to be thrown or launched at crowds as we are walking in the parade, this includes lollies and confetti.
Parade Order: We are group number 19 within the order of the parade. We understand a list was published on the Kana Facebook page that didn't include our name... this list was incorrect. The final list is being published in the Colac Herald this Friday, which will state St Brendan's at number 19.
We would like to say a big THANK YOU to Isis, Kara, Nenje and Lauren who have been planning and working hard on decorations for the parade, we really appreciate everything that you have done!
A VISIT FROM THE DOBCEL BOARD
On Tuesday we welcomed three members of the DOBCEL Board to our school; Monsignor Glynn Murphy, Terry Harney (former Principal of St. Brendan’s) and Anne Pekin.
They visited each classroom and enjoyed interacting with our students. They also walked around the school, visited the Church and learned more about St. Brendan’s during a discussion over lunch.
I am very appreciative that the DOBCEL Board takes the time to get out into the schools and see first hand what what is happening at the coalface. Creating these close connections makes us feel very supported and it gives the Board a real understanding of the daily workings and needs of schools.
Thank you to Glynn, Terry and Anne. It was a pleasure to have you in our school.

YEAR 5/6 CAMP
Next week the Year 5/6 students will be heading to Sovereign Hill for their School Camp from Monday until Wednesday. There is great excitement amongst the children and we can't wait to take them away. Stay tuned for an update in next week’s Newsletter.

NAPLAN
The NAPLAN testing schedule begins today. We encourage students to try their best and approach the tests calm and confidently. NAPLAN tests are just one form of assessment, and although they are a measure of a child’s progress, they do not tell the full picture of a child’s learning. School Reports, Learning Conversations, Seesaw posts and Learning Portfolios, all contribute to building your child’s learning profile and overall progress.
SWIMMING
This Friday will be our last Swimming lesson for Term One. We thank you for your patience with the changes to dates along the way. The children have done a terrific job of organising themselves and going with the flow during disruptions to the normal routine.

HARMONY DAY
Harmony Week is the celebration that recognises our diversity and brings together Australians from all different backgrounds.
It’s about inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone.
Harmony Day is technically celebrated on Tuesday, 21st March.
As the 5/6s are on Camp at this time, we will be celebrating on Thursday, March 23rd.
There will be a special Assembly at 2.30 and everyone is encouraged to wear a touch of orange. All Welcome.
DOBCEL CONSULTATIVE COMMITTEE LEADERSHIP VACANCIES
Schools have been asked to extend the following invitation to parents and guardians:
The DOBCEL Board provides opportunities for members of the diocesan education community, and others with relevant expertise, to participate in the mission of DOBCEL, to assist its governance and decision making and to inform faithful stewardship of the mission through DOBCEL Consultative Committees.
A range of vacancies exists across the DOBCEL Consultative Committees. These committees are an invaluable opportunity to ensure that the work of the Board and CEB reflects the needs of DOBCEL school communities right across the Diocese. Typically, the committees meet once each term for a duration of 90-120 Minutes. The opportunity exists to attend face-to-face or virtually. For volunteers to the organisation, compensation for expenses is available.
Opportunities exist for parents/guardians/carers with a child/children enrolled in a DOBCEL School to join one of the following;
- Catholic Faith Community & Culture Consultative Committee
- Children & Young People Safeguarding & Wellbeing Consultative Committee
- Family and Community Engagement Consultative Committee
- Learning and Teaching Consultative Committee
In the event of multiple nominations, the Board will invite Consultative Committee members on the basis of the general balance of the committee, taking into account factors such as gender, diversity, skill mix, location, school size, etc.
For more information please contact Jo Mckee jmckee@dobcel.catholic.edu.au or speak with your school principal. Expressions of interest are open until Wednesday, 26th April.

Prep/1 Classroom News

Welcome to another week! We’ve been working hard in the Prep/1 room.
Literacy: For writing, we’ve been exploring the focus text, “The Three Wishes.” This story was a hit with the children for several reasons. The characters are exciting and there’s lots of funny moments along the way. We’ve been using the story as inspiration when practising sentence writing. Students are doing a wonderful job of identifying the different parts of a sentence as well as sentence punctuation.
Word work: Grade 1’s are learning the four most common spellings of /ee/ like in tree. These are <ee> <e> <y> and <ea>. The Preps are working on the letters b, c, g and h this week. They have been reading and writing 3-letter words containing these sounds.
Maths: Last week, the teaching staff were lucky enough to attend a PD day with Michael Minas. Throughout the day, we learnt a range of strategies, games and activities we can use to enhance Maths teaching. This week in class, we have been playing some of those games as well as tackling some problem-solving.
Religion: Students considered the ritual of ‘The Sign of the Cross’ this week and how it is used to begin and conclude prayer. They also learnt about the use of prayer as means of communicating with God.
Integrated Curriculum: Our theme of ‘Community’ led us to explore the different people who make up our school community this week. Students identified all the teaching staff and their roles. Over the next few weeks, we will begin to explore other people within the wider community and how they contribute to society.
Keep up the home reading!

What is Project Compassion?
Project Compassion is Caritas Australia’s main annual fundraising campaign. It mobilises Australians to raise much-needed funds to help alleviate poverty, promote justice and uphold dignity in the most vulnerable and marginalised communities in the world.
Held during Lent, the six-week period before Easter, Catholic schools, Parishes, and the wider Australian public participate in a diverse range of fundraising activities and events to support Caritas Australia’s programs both overseas and here with our First Australian partners.
The theme of Project Compassion is For All Future Generations. This year, we focus on the stories of four remarkable, resilient people from Nepal, Australia, Zimbabwe and Vietnam.
