Newsletter No. 17 | Term 2 Week 8 | Thursday 16th June 2022
Prayer
Next week we mark National Refugee Week from Sunday 19th June to Saturday 25th June, with Monday 20th June being 'The World Day of Refugees'. The theme for the week is "Healing".
Lord, make us bearers of hope,
so that where there is darkness,
your light may shine,
and where there is discouragement,
confidence in the future may be reborn.
Lord, make us instruments of your justice,
so that where there is exclusion, fraternity may flourish,
and where there is greed, a spirit of sharing may grow.
Lord, make us builders of your Kingdom,
together with migrants and refugees
and with all who dwell on the peripheries.
Lord, let us learn how beautiful it is
to live together as brothers and sisters.
Amen.
(Pope Francis, Message for the World Day of Migrants and Refugees 2022.)
An update from Camp...
Our 5/6 students are having a wonderful time on their Melbourne Urban Camp along with Mrs Eastman, Miss Whytcross and Deb. The group arrived at camp around 9am yesterday after a very early 6.30am start from school.
The first activity on their agenda was the NGV (National Gallery of Victoria) Art Gallery which was very polular amoungst our creative students. From there students made their way on public transport to the Old Melbourne Gaol.
The Old Melbourne Gaol is a former jail and current museum on Russell Street that was operational as a prison between 1845 and 1924. It held some of Australia's most notorious crimals, even bushranger Ned Kelly! It would have been a very spooky tour, we can't wait to hear all about it when everyone returns to school.
Today students are visiting Parliment House, learning how to ice skate, heading out for dinner on the famous Lygon Street and then testing their bravery on the Eureka Sky Deck afterwards. They will certainly be tired by the time they get home on Friday!
Student Reports & Learning Conversations
A reminder that written reports will be sent home on Monday 20th June.
As part of the reporting process parents are offered a Learning Conversation with their child's classroom teacher. This provides a wonderful opportunity for students to sit down with their parents & teacher and present their portfolio, explaining the work they have completed throughout the term.
Learning Conversations are taking place on Tuesday 21st June (1 - 4pm) & Friday 24th June (9 - 2pm). If you are yet to book your Learning Conversation please do so as soon as possible as the time slots are quickly filling up. All bookings are to be made using PAM. If you are having trouble please read through the instructions below or contact the office on (03) 5233 1464.
Gellibrand Bush Excursion
Wednesday 22nd June is our whole school bush excursion to Gellibrand. Students will travel by bus depering school at 9.15am and returning before the end of the school day.
Everyone will need to wear very warm old/farm clothes with lots of layers. Waterproof pants would be a good idea if you have them as well as rubber boots and raincoats. We also reccommend packing a spare pair of dry pants and socks so there is the options to change and warm up instead of travelling home on the bus in wet clothes.
Students will need to bring with them their fruit and morning snack as well as a water bottle. Lunch will be supplied, we will be having 'Sloppy Joes' which is beef cooked on the camp fire with pita bread. If this is not a food your child would be willing to try please send them with a packed lunch. Students are also invited to bring toy trucks, shovels, mud picks and other toys for free play.
We welcome any and all parent helpers along on our bush excursions so if you are interested in attending please come along. Phone the office and let us know if you would like to attend.
A permission form for this excursion has been sent out today using PAM. Please ensure this is approved before next Tuesday so your child is able to attend this excursion.

LAST DAY OF TERM
Friday 24th June is the last day of Term and students are dressing up as 'What they would like to be when they grow up'.
This could be anything from a builder or a farmer through to a nurse, astronaut, chef, firefighter, movie star or where ever their imagination might take them! We can't wait to see what everyone envisions themselves doing in the future.
Prep/1 Classroom News
Welcome to week 8! Hope everyone enjoyed the long weekend and had the opportunity to relax and unwind. It was very kind of the powers at be to schedule a public holiday for my birthday. Furthermore, the Prep/1s had the most wonderful day on Tuesday helping me celebrate. Since Lexi’s birthday was on the 14th of June, we were appointed “Queen” and “Princess” for the day - it was lots of fun.
LITERACY: This week, we have continued learning about narrative writing. Guided by our model text, “The Snail and the Whale,” we looked at the tools an author uses to add description and interest when writing.
MATHS: Our unit on ‘Multiplication and Division’ is well underway. We have been learning about arrays and identifying the number of columns and rows. We even went on an array walk to find examples of arrays around the school.
INTEGRATED CURRICULUM: This week we have learnt how to use digital technology for mapping. As part of the “How cool is your school? Project,” we are drawing maps of the school and attempting to calculate how much shade we have. This has been a challenging project but students have shown great determination.
LET GROW PROJECT: Congratulations to the following students who completed their ‘Let Grow Projects’ this week:
Pearl Armistead put the rug on her pony, Carl, all by herself. This is a difficult task that requires lots of patience and perseverance. Congratulations Pearl!
REMINDERS:
- Next Wednesday is the Bush Excursion to Gellibrand. This is gearing up to be a very enjoyable day spent searching for mushrooms and exploring the outdoors.
- Learning conversations are scheduled for week 9. There will be Tuesday and Friday time slots available.

2/3/4 Classroom News
Welcome to Week 8!
One more week to go!!!!
I am looking forward to chatting with you all at the Learning Conversations next week.
It is always lovely to see the interaction between the children and their family members when they present the Portfolios to them.
We hope the Year 5/6’s have a great time on Urban Camp.
LITERACY: For Writing the children are still working on Information Reports about an animal of their choice. We have been learning about doubling letters when we add the suffixes ‘ed’ or ‘ing’. If the word ends short vowel consonant double the consonant before adding ‘ed’ or ‘ing’ except for the consonants x and w. For example: drip – dripped and dripping.
Our EPIC reading total is at 900 books. An amazing effort 2/3/4’s!
RELIGION: In R.E. we have been investigating ways we can show love for God’s creation and what we can do individually to help the environment.
MATHS: In Maths we have been investigating fact families for multiplication and division and learning our times tables.
Homework was sent home on Tuesday with a fun multiplication worksheet where you have to use a code to find the message.
The Star of the Week award goes to Ava D’Altera. Congratulations on your excellent work and effort!
Cheers,

Acknowledgement of Country
At St. Brendan’s Primary School we pay our respects to the traditional owners of the land, the Gulidjan people and pay our respect to their Elders past, present and emerging.
We will respect the land, animals and waterways, from the roots of the earth to the tops of the trees. Through the example of our first Australians, we understand that if we look after the country, then the country will look after us.
